When Maggie was about 3, she saw a Disney special where Donald’s nephews wished for Christmas every day. We watched it, a LOT (as you do with 3 year olds). I can remember her chanting “Twismas evey-day!” in her little toddler voice. In the story, the nephews got tired of celebrating Christmas every day and it was with great relief when they finally woke up to the day after Christmas — though, much like in the plot of “Groundhog Day” the day didn’t change until they had finally learned to appreciate Christmas.

Most companies spend the majority of their time focused on business objectives, productivity, ROI, customer service, as they should. We are in business for a reason. And the people working for you? They want you to be successful, because your success is their success. You definitely won’t be successful without your employees.
Much like Huey, Duey & Louie, you need to do Employee Appreciation Every Day until you get it right. And it doesn’t need to be difficult, elaborate or over the top. There are so many small things you can do each and every day to show your employees how much they matter to you and your bottom line.
- Say Thank You. In Person. In Zoom. In Email. Anyway you can, a simple Thank You for coming in, for following up, can go a very long way.
- Ensure your staff know how they fit into the big picture. Each position you have is important to the overall success of your organization, but does everyone know how they fit? Write it into their job descriptions, talk about it during 1:1s, or performance reviews.
- Tell them when they do something well – don’t save it. Celebrate their wins, no matter how small. Let your employees know that you are proud of them!
Do these 3 things every day and soon, you will have your own Groundhog Day moment.
